The wage gap between men and women in Cyprus is still there with only a handful of pay rises recorded in average monthly gross earnings between 2015 and 2017.
Statistics Service data shows that average monthly gross earnings for mining and mineral extraction jobs were €2,802 in 2017, €2,659 in 2016 and €2,941 in 2015. Men’s salaries were €3,163 in 2015, €2,804 in 2016, and €2,939 in 2017. However, women earned only €1,960, €2,088 and €2,233 respectively over those years.
In manufacturing, average total monthly gross earnings were €1,484 in 2015, €1,499 in 2016 and €1,522 in 2017. Specifically, men’s salaries were €1,636 in 2015, €1,648 in 2016 and €1,676 in 2017, while women earned €1,215, €1,224 and €1,238 respectively over those years.
In commerce, the pay gap is much wider with men in wholesale trade getting an average of €1,847 in 2015, compared to women’s €1,420 (that is, 30.07% of difference). In 2017, men were paid €1880 and women €1,463 (a difference of 30.92%). In retail trade, the average pay gap between men and women decreased by 5.55% over the three-year period of 2015-2017.
In the public administration sector, average monthly gross earnings of men decreased from €2,731 in 2015 to €2,646 in 2017, while that of women increased slightly from €2,600 to €2,636.
