In recent years, more and more Cypriots travelled in the winter months because of cheap airfares on offer and a plethora of short stay getaways, Phileleftheros reports.
In addition, Christmas getaways are quite expensive so many travellers choose to take a trip the rest of winter.
At the same time, business trips appear to be on the rise in winter, along with parents making frequent visits to their adult children studying abroad.
British airports are among the 10 top destinations from Larnaca and Paphos between November 2019 and February 2020, indicating the close ties between Cyprus and the United Kingdom. However, the most popular destination for Cypriot travellers, also in the winter months, Â is still Athens.
Hermes Airports data shows that Athens tops the market share with 17%, followed by Moscow with 7.7%, Tel Aviv with 7% and Salonica with 5.9%.
The other top places are the four London airports – Gatwick (4.2%), Luton (3.2%), Stansted (3.1%) and Heathrow (3%), Vienna (3.4%) and Manchester (3.2%).
As for preferred airlines, Ryanair ranks first in the winter market share. In fact, it has also recorded one of the largest rises compared to last year’s winter season, according to the data.
Specifically, top airlines by market share are Ryanair (14.8%), Aegean Airlines (14%), Wizz Air (11.1%), easyJet (9.9%), Blue Air (6.5%), Cyprus Airways (4.3%) %), Jet2 (3.8%), TUI Airways (3.3%), British Airways (3.2%) and Aeroflot (2.7%).
At the same time, Wizz Air (2.5%), followed by Ryanair (1.8%) and Jet2 (1.4%), have recorded the largest increases in market share.
