Independent probe into police’s handling of murdered women’s disappearances

The Independent Authority for Investigating Complaints and Claims against the Police will appoint two lawyers to investigate whether members of the police committed criminal or disciplinary offences in their handling of the disappearances of women who were later found murdered by a suspected serial killer.

According to Phileleftheros, the Attorney General has given the green light for the investigation. He instructed the Authority not to appoint police officers as investigators.

The Authority said it would be probing the possible “commission of criminal and disciplinary offences and the people involved.”

Police is already conducting a separate internal probe into possible shortcoming in the handling of the disappearances.

Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou has resigned over police’s failure to investigate properly the disappearances and chief of police Zacharias Chrysostomou was dismissed by the President.

A 35 year old army captain has allegedly confessed to killing seven women, including two young girls and dumping their bodies at various locations, including the toxic lake and a reservoir.

Some of the victims were reported missing as far back as 2016.

Friends and relatives who reported the disappearances said that police assured them that the murdered women had left for the occupied north.
