With the deadline for the renewal of vehicle registration licenses for the year 2024 now passed, it’s important to be aware of certain details.
Vehicle registration licenses for the year 2024 are renewed from Thursday, January 4, 2024, until midnight on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at 24:00 without any extra charge. For renewals made after Sunday, March 10, 2024, an additional fee is imposed, consisting of the sum of €10 and an amount equal to ten percent (10%) of the registration license corresponding to the due amount for the current year. Registration licenses can be renewed for periods of three, six, nine, and twelve months.

According to data from the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Works (Department of Road Transport), as of February 9, 2024, 304,263 vehicle registration licenses have been renewed, out of which 276,245 were renewed online. By the same day in 2023, that is, February 9, 2023, 299,634 vehicle registration licenses had been renewed, with 275,183 renewed online.
The Road Transport Department urges vehicle owners to ensure timely renewal of their vehicle registration licenses and advises against waiting until the last days to avoid potential system overload that could cause inconvenience.
Vehicle registration licenses can be renewed throughout the year, online, at Citizen Service Centers (KEP), at District Offices of the Postal Services Department, and at District Offices of the Road Transport Department. No notifications have been sent to vehicle owners regarding the renewal of registration licenses.
Regarding immobilization:
Vehicle owners who renewed their vehicle registration licenses for the year 2023 but do not intend to renew them for 2024 must submit a notification of immobilization to the Road Transport Department. Immobilization can also be done online on the department’s website. Otherwise, the obligation to pay the end-of-registration fee continues to apply.
For vehicles whose registration licenses were not renewed for the year 2023 and have not been declared immobilized, they will be deleted from the department’s registry if the due amount for 2023 is not paid and their registration license is not renewed for 2024 by midnight on Sunday, March 10, 2024.
In the event of a vehicle’s destruction, an application for cancellation of registration (form RTD 98A) must be submitted to the Road Transport Department, accompanied by a “Certificate of Destruction” issued by authorized end-of-life vehicle processing facilities, in order for the vehicle owner to be exempt from the obligation to pay registration fees from the date of the vehicle’s destruction.
