House President and members of the Diplomatic Corps discuss consequences of war in Ukraine

The consequences of the war in Ukraine, with special reference to the humanitarian aspect and the management of the growing flows of refugees from Ukraine, were discussed on Thursday during a meeting between the President of the House of Representatives Annita Dimitriou with Ambassadors of Slovakia Jan Skoda, Poland Irena Lichnerowicz Augustyn, Bulgaria Lyobomir Todorov, the Czech Republic Vladimir Němec, and the Chargés d’affaires of Romania Ion Mihai Stirbu and Hungary Krisztina Lakos.

According to a press release by the House of Representatives, Demetriou noted the relevant resolution unanimously adopted by the House, reaffirming Cyprus` commitment to the principles of sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine, noting that Cyprus is aware of the plight of refugees, living with the consequences of the Turkish invasion and continued occupation of part of its territory by Turkey for forty-eight years.

She stressed the need for more collegiality between EU Member States and the readiness of Cyprus to contribute to the redistribution of refugee flows, as much as possible.

Demetriou also noted the immediate response of Cypriots to the collection of humanitarian aid, which has already been sent to the Ukrainian people.

The diplomats who took part in the meeting referred to the political declaration of their countries in favour of Ukraine`s application for EU membership, as well as to the reception and hospitality that their countries provide to refugees, noting the solidarity and very good coordination between them.

The common will to take joint initiatives and actions to address the challenges posed by the crisis in Ukraine, in particular in the areas of temporary housing, work and education, was underlined, the press release concludes.
