Greece winning cosmetics battle in Cyprus

Greece is the main supplier of cosmetics to Cyprus according to figures for the first nine months of 2017, while Greek exports of cosmetics to Cyprus have shot up by 435% in the past 19 years, Phileleftheros reported on Tuesday.

It said that according to a survey by the commercial attache’s office of the Greek embassy in Cyprus, cosmetic imports from Greece had jumped from €6.85 m in 2000 to €33m in 2016 and €36.7 m in 2017.

Greece accounts for 35.7% of total imports of cosmetics in Cyprus. Next come France, Germany, Italy, the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Israel, UAE, USA, Ireland and other countries.

The same figures show that Greece is Cyprus’ main supplier for most types of cosmetics: make up; manicure -pedicure products, powders, shampoo, toothpaste, mouth wash, shaving items, salts and bath products, deodorants, soap and shower gels.

As regards sun screens in 2017 , Greece accounted for 62% of total imports.

A large part of Greece’s exports are re-exports of foreign products, although there is no breakdown of these figures, the paper noted.

Greece does not do as well as regards oils, scent/perfume, hair products etc. where it is surpassed by the UK, France, Belgium, Germany, Spain and Switzerland .
