Government to increase education budget by €38,69 million

House Finance Committee examined today, the budget proposed by the Ministry of Education for 2019.

According to Minister Costas Chambiaouris, the education budget for 2019 will be €1,078,639,125, an increase of €38,69 million compared to 2018.

€ 37,15 million will go toward tactical expenditure and € 1,54 million to development.

Chambiaouris mentioned that the budget was prepared in accordance with the  Financial Policy Framework 2019 -2021 guidelines and was approved by the cabinet.

He added that the education is being reorganised in order to create of flexible individual structures and more effective implementation of strategic goals.

He also mentioned that 20 new positions for educational psychologists have been included in the 2019 budget.

Committee President Kyriakos Chatzigiannis said that the Ministry is moving in the right direction in order to modernise the education system. However, he expressed his concern for the increase in tactical expenditure compared to developmental expenditure, which will only increase by 1.5%.

“With the current course of things, if we do not rationalise the finances of the Ministry of Education, we will surely have tremendous problems by 2021. We urgently need to see what to do with the demands of educational staff. There also should be a mechanism that will monitor the needs of the Ministry every year,” Chatzigiannis said.

AKEL, DIKO and Green Party MPs said that although the education budget is higher, the fundamental problems of education still remain unadressed.
