Government employment decreases slightly in May due to casual staff in education

Government employment in May 2020 decreased both on an annual basis and in relation to April 2020, according to a report by the Statistical Service of Cyprus.

Compared to April 2020, government employment decreased by 325 persons or by 0,6%.  A decrease was observed in all the categories except Security Forces where it increased by 0.3% (42 persons). The largest decrease was observed in Education (-2.5%) and more specifically in the number of casual staff which decreased by -7.9% (356 persons).

In May 2020 total government employment decreased by 315 persons (-0.6%) in comparison to the corresponding month of 2019 and reached 52,325 persons. Permanent staff decreased by 688 persons (-2.4%), from 28,356 to 27,668 persons. Casual staff increased by 567 persons (3.6%) and reached 16,185 persons compared to 15,618 persons in May 2019.

Compared to May 2019 there is a decrease in Civil Service staff (-0.8%) and more specifically in the permanent staff (-3.0%), an increase in Education staff (0.2%) and more specifically in casual staff (6.6%) while the staff of Security Forces remained stable.
