Four cases of West Nile virus confirmed in Nicosia

Four cases of West Nile virus in the wider Nicosia region have been confirmed.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Health, in addition to these four incidents, a fifth is still under investigation in the Ammochostos area.

The virus has only hit older people so far.

Moreover, medical service are also aware of an increase in cases in the occupied area.

One of the incidents is currently being treated at the Nicosia General Hospital intensive care unit, one at the Nicosia General Hospital pathology clinic and two at the Nicosia Private Hospital, of which at the intensive care unit.

The Health Service today has sprayed the area around the Pedieos river in order to kill potential disease-carrying mosquitoes.

“Today we sent experts along the river to to eliminate the mosquitoes from the stagnant waters,” Public Health Director Albertos Karis said.

“At a first glance, the insects did not appear to be hatching. We are also working together with the municipality of Paralimni in the area of Agia Triada where there are stagnant waters, regardless of the fact that the municipality has already recently sprayed the waters over there. ”

The Health Service has urged the public to take all necessary protective measures against the virus, like wearing appropriate clothing with long sleeves and trousers, and use insect repellent when outside.

Earlier this week, Karis stressed that the disease “is not transmitted from human to human but only through the bite of an infected insect to a healthy human being and that serious consequences only occur in the elderly and in those with weakened immune systems.”
