The first batch of the Moderna vaccine against Covid-19 which includes 1,200 doses were delivered to Cyprus on Tuesday evening, according to the Ministry of Health.
Cyprus expects delivery of a total of 16,500 Moderna vaccines within the first three months of 2021, the Ministry also said.
This vaccine has to be kept in storage under the same conditions as those for the Pfizer-BioNTech one.
In Cyprus, they will be stored in one of the two refrigerators the State Health Services Organisation has for this purpose.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended granting a conditional marketing authorisation for COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna to prevent Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) to people from 18 years of age on January 6.
In a press release, it said among other things that a very large clinical trial showed that COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna was effective at preventing COVID-19 in people from 18 years of age.
The trial involved around 30,000 people in total. Half received the vaccine and half were given dummy injections. People did not know whether they received the vaccine or the dummy injections.
Efficacy was calculated in around 28,000 people from 18 to 94 years of age who had no sign of previous infection.
The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is given as two injections into the arm, 28 days apart.
