Fire services rescue 5 from cars in 24 hours; tell drivers to stay away from streams (video)

The fire service said that it had rescued five people trapped in cars in the 24 hour period through to 7 am on Thursday as it appealed to drivers not to attempt to drive through streams and flooded streets.

It said that it had responded to a total of 36 calls for assistance related to the  adverse weather conditions — pumping water from flooded buildings, moving fallen trees and rescuing drivers trapped in cars trying to cross flooded roads and streams.

It said two people were rescued in the Yialia river near Kotsiatis. Another driver was rescued after he became trapped trying to cross Tremythos river near Alambra-Mosphiloti. All three operations were carried out by the Nicosia fire services.

Yesterday afternoon the fire services and disaster response unit EMAK was called in to rescue two people in a car that became stuck in the middle of the Krios river, between the villages of Ayios Therapon and Lofou.

The car was secured to prevent it being carried away by the current and EMAK were able to bring the two to safety. They were taken to Limassol hospital as a precaution. The police and a helicopter also took part in the rescue operation.

Both the fire service and police have urged drivers not to attempt to drive through flooded roads and streams as this puts their lives at risk.
