The fire service responded to dozens of calls to extinguish bonfires — an Easter ‘tradition’ prohibited by decrees introduced to prevent the spread of coronavirus and despite efforts by police and local authorities who have been removing piles of wood to prevent a repeat this year .
According to CyBC, the fire service responded to five calls in Larnaca — three at Livadhia and two in the Phameromeni area to extinguish piles of wood that had been set on fire.
Fire fighters also extinguished 29 such fires in Nicosia and 17 in Limassol.
Also last night a young man sustained serious injuries to his left hand after a fire cracker he was attempting to throw exploded. He underwent surgery and remains in hospital.
