February inflow to dams breaks record; yearly inflow set to be best in 30 years

The inflow of water into the dams so far this month has already broken a record, while Cyprus is on track to break a 30 year record for total annual inflow, Water Development Department official Phedros Roussis told the Cyprus News Agency on Wednesday.

He said that if inflow continues at the current rate, both Asprokremmos — the island’s second largest dam — and Kalavasos are set to overflow.

Asporkremos is currently 93.9% full and needs another 3.3 mcm (million cubic metres) to overflow. At current inflows (300,000) it needs ten 10 days to overflow, he said.

Overall, the dams collected 2.1 mcm in the past 24 hours.

“Water stocks are 73.4%  at all the dams. Kalavasos dam — which has a capacity of 17.1 mcm is 89.4% full with stocks of 15.3 mcm.

As regards inflow, Roussis said that February has already set a record. “We have had an inflow of 48.8 mcm this month up until today which is a record. The next best February was in 2015 with 44.5 mcm,” he said.

The dams are also on track for record yearly inflow. It currently stands at 185.3 mcm. The previous best year was in 2012 with 191.7 mcm.

“In a few days we will have a record for yearly inflow,” he said adding that as regards water stocks this is one of the best years.
