Fall is the time for exams for Public Sector jobs

Fall is the time for exams for those who want to join Cyprus’ public sector which seems to be quite popular considering that candidates are in the thousands.

It has been officially announced that October and November are the months for exams for the public service. And even though it has not been officially announced, November is when exams for jobs in the education sector are set to take place.

The fee for an exam is €50 and this provides the state with a substantial amount of revenue. But it is clarified that this revenue covers expenses arising from the preparation of exams and for the staff on duty those days. As well as costs from the grading of exam papers.

The A7 scale exams will take place on October 19 and that of A8 on November 2 with insiders saying candidates this year will exceed 8,000. They are required to pay the $50 fee this week, something that will also clarify the final number of applicants. As this number stands, the state should collect almost half a million euros.

Last year, the exams revenue for the state was almost double considering that 10,004 people applied for A8 scale positions and 9,016 people actually sat for the exams. The total amount collected was €450,800. As for A7 payroll exams, the applicants were 7,774 but 6,896 took the exams and the total revenue was €388,700.

At the same time, exams for teaching positions were taken two years ago. This year’s applicants were asked to apply by October 2, with no exam dates announced as yet. In 2017, 4,915 teachers took the exams even though 5,583 had paid the due fee.

Meanwhile, in addition to the exams for first appointment, incumbent civil servants are also keen to sit for exams. Because the civil service law stipulates that inter-governmental exams have to be taken by newcomers so as to ratify their appointment and ‘lock’ surcharge payments.
