In accordance to the Forest Law, “Protected Flora and Fauna Area” is a Main State Forest which is declared by the Council of Ministers as a forest and its aim is to provide proper and permanent protection to the flora and fauna.
To this day seven (7) Nature Protection Areas have been declared totaling an area of 4788,4 hectares.
Short description of each area
1. Tripylos
The Tripylos area is situated in the Pafos forest and includes the unique stands of the endemic Cyprus Cedar as well as remarkable stands of the Golden oak and important Calabrian pine forests.
A large number of endemic plants can be found in this area, approximately 40, and rare birds of the island. The Tripylos areas is considered one of the most important habitats for the Cyprus Mouflon (agrino).
It is included in the European network of protected areas, “NATURA 2000».
2. Pikromiloudi
It is situated in the Troodos area and includes black pine forests and stands of golden oak. A very rare plant is also found in the area which is called the Butterwort (Pinguicula crystallina), which has been included in the annexes of the Habitats Directive. The area has been included in the network of areas “NATURA 2000”.
3. Livadi tou Pashia
It is situated in the Troodos range and includes the unique to our island Troodos turfs, which are wetlands developed in cavities which are flooded during winter and they remain muddy and wet during the summer too. They are restricted in the protected area.
It is included in the European network of protected areas “NATURA 2000”.
4. Chionistra
It is situated in the Troodos range and includes black pine forests, stands of the Phoenician juniper and Serpentinophilous grasslands of Cyprus. It also accommodates large numbers of the Cyprus crocuses which has been included in the annexes of the Habitats Directive.
It is included in the European network of protected areas, “NATURA 2000”.
5. Presidential Residence red with significant stands of black pine, golden oak and riparian oriental plane trees.
Two other types of flora are also found in the area, the Butterwort (Pinguicula crystallina) and the Kennedy’s rock-cress (Arabis kennedyae), which have been included in the annexes of the Habitat Directive.
Is included in the European network of protected areas “NATURA 2000”.
6. Madari
The Madari region is in the Adelfi Forest and it includes very important and unique forest ecosystems, such as the black pine forest, the pure golden oak and juniper (Juniperus excelsa) stands. 40 endemic species of flora and a large number of rare birds are found in the area, among them three endemic species. The Raven (Corvus corax), which is very rare on the island has its nests in this area.
It is included in the European network of protected areas, “NATURA 2000”.
7. Mavri Gremmi
The Mavri Gremmi area is situated in the Pafos forest and includes very significant stands of golden oak, calabrian pine as well as riparian ecosystems of the plane tree. Quite a few endemic and other rare species of the island’s flora are also found in the area. Rare birds such as the Griffon vulture, the Bonelli’s eagle, and the Goshawk can also be found there. It is also considered as one of the most significant habitats for the Cyprus mouflon (Ovis gmelini ophion).
It is included in the European network of protected areas “NATURA 2000”.
