Relevant News

The University of Nicosia is consistently ranked among leading universities in the Emerging Europe and Central Asia (EECA) region (QS World University Ranking).

It is also the largest university in Cyprus in terms of enrolled students, and the largest university in Southern Europe that teaches primarily in English, welcoming 12,000+ students (on campus and distance learning) from over 70 countries across the globe, while maintaining teams in numerous cities worldwide.

The UNIC Advantage

The University of Nicosia focuses on quality teaching aimed at fostering skills that will help students integrate quickly and effectively into the international labour market. UNIC also aims at connecting students with future employers and providing lifelong learning opportunities to its graduates.

In parallel, UNIC focuses on cutting-edge research specifically related to the 4th Industrial Revolution, aiming to make a positive impact on society. A particularly important pillar of UNIC’s efforts is social engagement, within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to secure a better future for all of humanity.

At the student experience level, UNIC’s efforts are focused on delivering a comprehensive and highly positive overall experience both for on-campus and distance-learning students. The primary goal for UNIC is to continuously upgrade its academic, research and social performance.

These efforts and its broad contribution in the wider region have been recognised in its most recent international distinctions and academic rankings.

International distinctions and academic rankings

UNIC is consistently ranked among the leading universities in the region by QS World University Rankings. The global rankings agency has recognised UNIC for two years running in the Emerging Europe and Central Asia (EECA) Region, with the University ranking at numbers 91 and 106 in 2019 and 2020, respectively, across 24 countries (among them Russia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Croatia, Romania, Estonia, Lithuania, Turkey, Ukraine) in which over 1,800 universities operate.

UNIC also secured an Institutional Rating of 4 QS Stars from the QS Intelligence Unit for overall excellence in education, while it was the first university in the EU to be awarded a 5-Star rating for Online/Distance Learning. With this recognition, the University of Nicosia reached a triple certification milestone in this field, having also been labelled as an ‘E-xcellence Associate in Quality’ (2015), by the European Association of Distance Learning Universities (EADTU), as well as achieving the UNIQUe Certification for Quality in e-Learning and Excellence in the use of ICT in Higher Education (2014), awarded by the European Foundation for Quality in e-Learning (EFQUEL).

UNIC is internationally recognised by independent observers for its dynamic and pioneering university Blockchain and Cryptocurrency initiative in the fields of teaching, research and development. Notably, UNIC is the first university in the world to offer a free online course “Introduction to Digital Currencies” (MOOC) which, since 2014, has been followed by over 30,000 students from 85 countries across all continents. This course was recently recognised in an article on forbes.com (December 2019), as among the best offered in the world today.

Connected with the labour market

The University of Nicosia focuses on developing programmes designed for global careers, based on employer demands worldwide and the rapidly evolving technology-driven terrain.

Indicative of this is the fact that 99.4% of its Medical School graduates are practicing doctors at more than 200 medical centres around the world, including top global hospitals, such as John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, St. Mary’s Hospital and King’s College Hospital in London, Mount Sinai in New York, Sheba Medical Center in Israel, and others. Another important example is the University’s recent international collaboration with Deloitte, Cass Business School  and Globaltraining, which offers students the means to fast track their career with internship and employment opportunities at Deloitte, while pursuing an innovative study route in Accounting and Finance.

This direct connection with employers is a vital component of the University’s effort to ensure that its students graduate not only with the necessary academic qualifications, but also with the skillset needed to stand out in today’s globally competitive professional environment.

Engagement with Society

Social Responsibility is fundamental to the University of Nicosia and is actively demonstrated by its substantial and varied contribution. This community engagement has been recognised by the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings, which ranked UNIC among the top 301+ worldwide in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), acknowledging  its global social and economic impact.

Most recently, the University’s MENTOR Youth Guidance Programme was awarded as the “Community Engagement Initiative of the Year”, as part of the inaugural Asia-Pacific Triple E Awards, initiated by the Accreditation Council for Entrepreneurial and Engaged Universities (ACEEU).

Why choose the University of Nicosia?

The University of Nicosia is an ideal choice for students looking for an internationally recognised university that combines a strong international orientation, focuses on new technologies and social developments, connects with employers and industry, and delivers a growing network of graduates with global careers. UNIC combines academic excellence with an outstanding campus experience and affordable teaching, compared to other universities of the same caliber.
