There are stiff penalties in cases where the EU directive on the transport of animals in high temperatures is flouted, the director of the Veterinary Services Christodoulos Pipis says,
In an interview with Radio Active, Pipis said added that the EU is closely scrutinizes possible animal abuse particularly on the long routes between north and eastern Europe. He said that it mandates national authorities to monitor the situation, carry out spot checks and impose high fines.
Transporting animals without taking the necessary protective measures is subject to fines of between €1,000 and €5,000. In cases where the veterinary services object, the competent minister has the right to multiply this fine.
