Education Ministry considering ‘entry card’ for schools

The Education Ministry is considering introducing an ‘entry’ card for parents and guardians as it mulls additional security measures in the wake of the abduction of two boys from a Larnaca primary school.

Education Minister Costas Hambiaouris told Radio Active on Friday that the issue would be discussed with the School Committees chairman next week.

The minister said that building high fences or walls around the schools may not be the best solution, but clarified that the case differed from school to school.

In the event of the introduction of special ID cards to access school grounds, these will be issued to parents and guardians.

Tuesday’s kidnapping has renewed calls for increased security at schools. The two boys were approached in the school playground and followed the suspect to his apartment, several hundred metres away without being stopped by anyone.
