ECDC: Vaccination not enough to halt spread of Omicron variant

The EU health agency has warned that vaccinations alone won’t stop the rise of the Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus and said “strong action” was urgently needed.

The warning comes hours only after health experts advising the government on Covid-19 on Thursday openly criticized officials in Nicosia for not taking prompt strong action.

Head of the Advisory Scientific Committee Constantinos Tsioutis went as far as to say they were not even asked to give their views before the new measures were officially announced on Monday.

Other Committee members described the measures as political and short from essential ones.

At the same time, on Friday European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned the Omicron variant could become dominant in Europe next month.

But she also said Europe is in a better position now to fight the virus.
