Concert: Paolo Fresu Trio at The Olive Grove

Relevant News

The Pharos Arts Foundation returns to its breathtaking open-air venue The Olive Grove in Delikipos again this summer, to host a concert with the internationally celebrated Paolo Fresu Trio, on Friday June 23 at 8:30 pm.

Widely regarded as one the most renowned Italian jazz artists, trumpeter Paolo Fresu has established himself as a true virtuoso in his field, with an incredible global presence and musical prowess that has earned him countless prizes and a prolific discography of over 400 recordings and collaborations with some of the world’s leading artists. Hailing from Sardinia, and performing for the first time in Cyprus, Fresu is renowned for incorporating Mediterranean traits into his music, while his innovative techniques have stretched and redefined the boundaries of jazz.

His recently formed Paolo Fresu Trio (consisting also of the brilliant jazz pianist Dino Rubino and bassist Marco Bardoscia), possessing an evocative, spiritual-like quality, harnesses the remarkable innate abilities of each of its members to create art and convey life. Fresu’s warm sound and creative mind intertwine seamlessly with Bardoscia’s powerful and enthralling double-bass lines, while Rubino’s elegant yet vibrant pianism adds another layer of rare flair.

The concert on Friday 23 June in The Olive Grove, kindly supported by the Embassy of Italy, draws upon the unique cultural and historical ties between Cyprus and Sardinia – two islands not divided but rather united by the sea, belonging to the same Mediterranean civilization that has inspired the music and art of countless creators since the antiquity. Fresu is in fact, the founder of Sardinia’s Time in Jazz – a festival which, for over 35 years, has managed to transform the picturesque, small town of Berchidda into a vibrant hub of artistic expression. He has recently formed “Insulae Lab” – the first production centre of jazz music and artistic creativity in the Mediterranean, with the aim of fostering the exchange of artists and ideas and enhancing their experiences, traditions, and cultural identities. A continuous cultural and artistic workshop that involves, apart from Sardinia, other Mediterranean islands, “Insulae Lab” has so far extended to Sicily, Corsica, Malta, the Balearic Islands, France, and now to Cyprus.

PAOLO FRESU TRIO

The Paolo Fresu Trio possesses an evocative and almost spiritual quality, harnessing the remarkable innate abilities of its members to create art and convey life. This is exemplified by the unique collaboration between Paolo Fresu, Dino Rubino, and Marco Bardoscia. Each musician brings their distinct style and personal experiences together in a refined three-part dialogue, resulting in a harmonious fusion that is both diverse and complementary. The trio engages in a refined three-part dialogue, evoking profound emotional and intellectual responses. Fresu’s warm sound and creative mind intertwine seamlessly with Bardoscia’s powerful and enthralling double-bass lines, while Rubino’s elegant yet vibrant pianism adds another layer of rare flair. Originally formed for the theatrical project Tempo di Chet – La versione di Chet Baker, produced by Teatro Stabile di Bolzano and directed by Leo Muscato, the Trio’s repertoire consists entirely of original compositions by the three musicians. Additionally, some pieces draw inspiration from Paolo Fresu’s music for the album Tempo di Chet, released by Tǔk Music, Fresu’s own record label.

Winner of a wide array of awards, Paolo Fresu is internationally acclaimed as a true virtuoso of jazz trumpet. Hailing from Sardinia, he is a graduate of the Cagliari Conservatory, where he studied under Enzo Morandini. In 1990, he won the Top Jazz Prize of Musica Jazz magazine as the Best Italian Musician, Best Group (for Paolo Fresu Quintet) and Best Record (for the album, Live in Montpellier). In 1996, in Paris, he won the coveted Prize of Académie du Jazz, and the prestigious Django d’Or Prize as the Best European Jazz Musician, and in 2000, he was nominated as the Best International Musician. A long series of awards have followed one another to date, among which the honorary citizenships of Nuoro, Junas (France) and Sogliano Cavour, and the Honorary Degree from La Bicocca University of Milan and the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Paolo Fresu has repeatedly appeared as a soloist with such important orchestras as the NDR – German Radio Orchestra of Hamburg, ONJ – French National Jazz Orchestra, Rai Symphony Orchestra, Verona Arena Orchestra, Grande Orchestra Italiana, I Virtuosi Italiani, among others. He has recorded over 400 records – of which over 90 in his name or as a leader, and many in collaboration with other renowned international musicians, eg Michael Nyman, Evan Parker, Ornella Vanoni, Gunther Schüller, Negramaro, Farafina, in “mixed” projects such as jazz-ethnic or world music, contemporary music and ancient music. He is also involved in the production of numerous multimedia projects, collaborating with actors, dancers, painters, sculptors, and poets, as well as writing music for film, documentary, video, ballet, and the theatre. Fresu is the founder of Sardinia’s celebrated Time in Jazz – a festival which, for over 35 years, has managed to transform the picturesque, small town of Berchidda into a vibrant hub of artistic expression. For over 25 years, he has been the artistic director and lecturer of the Nuoro Jazz Seminars, and he served as the director of the Festival of Bergamo for three years. In 2010, he founded his own label Tŭk Music.

The Sicilian pianist and trumpet player Dino Rubino made his entrance into the top floors of Italian jazz by winning the 1998 Premio Internazionale Massimo Urbani for Best Emerging Talent. In 2000 Rubino, he was invited by Furio Di Castri to participate in the Young Artists of Europe programme, as part of which he toured Europe for concerts.  In 2011, Paolo Fresu called him to record for his label, Tŭk Music, for which he has made most of his albums. Dino Rubino has appeared in stages such as the Umbria Jazz Festival, Marciac Jazz Festival, Shangai Italian Expo, Portugal’s Loulè Jazz Festival, MITO jazz Festival, amongst many others. One of his most riveting projects is his piano solo performance, featured in his album, Roaming Heart. He has collaborated closely with Riccardo Cisi, and he is the leader of On Air Trio, which includes also double-bassist Paolino Dalla Porta and percussionist Enzo Zirilli.

Marco Bardoscia has performed more than a thousand concerts in four continents, and in the most prestigious festivals around the world. He has also been featured in over forty recordings and plays his instrument without limits of genre or style. In the last year only, he has recorded and collaborated with Paolo Fresu, Daniele Di Bonaventura, Gianluca Petrella, Ernst Reijseger, Paolo Damiani Double Trio, Raffaele Casarano, Luca Aquino, Banda Municipal de Santiago de Cuba and more. As a band leader and co-leader, he released a number of acclaimed albums, and he has recently collaborated as a composer in the B.A.M. project (of which he is the co-leader with Alborada String Quartet and Rita Marcotulli) to produce Trigono, the new album released by Tŭk Music.
