If you are an eco-warrior wondering how the beach can lay claim to its environmentally-friendly crown, then rest assured that you can indeed enjoy the sun, sand and sea at Yiannathes with a clear conscience, as only beaches that meet certain criteria set by an initiative entitled ‘Greening Cyprus Beaches’ can be awarded the label.
So what is eco-friendly about the beach? There are some obviously environmentally-friendly features – such as endemic plants, recycling bins and parking for bicycles, as well as subtle details such as locally-produced clay ashtrays and environmentally friendly signage. And its eco status is further enhanced by its Blue Flag Award – another eco-label awarded to beaches and marinas in nearly 50 countries that have met strict criteria including water quality, safety standards and the provision of services and general environmental management.
Made up of gold sands and safe, clean waters, Yiannathes also boasts scenic natural beauty, and its sands are being kept extra pristine from this year thanks to a new sand-cleaning machine. The beach is great for all types of beachgoers and divers will enjoy exploring the reefs in the wider area, whilst there are also a variety of watersports on offer.
And naturally, the beach also offers comforts and conveniences, with sunloungers, umbrellas, lifeguard, toilets, changing rooms, showers and parking, as well as a variety of drinking and dining options, making it a great choice for everyone – with an ethical slant too!
