According to environmental organizations, a significant disaster is underway in Akamas due to road construction projects within the framework of the National Forest Park’s strategic plan.
Following the complaints, investigations by the authorities have been initiated, but they do not seem to be leading anywhere. The issue is not about making the roads started within Akamas narrower but rather about avoiding their construction altogether. For many years, communities in the area have been pressuring political parties and governments during election periods for projects that would bring “development” to the region as they envision it.
Which government will place the ‘tombstone’ of the destruction of Akamas? The Christodoulides government halted the projects for investigations until people grew tired of monitoring them, and the works resumed, resulting in irreparable damage to one of Cyprus’ unique natural treasures.
The president has shown sensitivity and ordered a freeze on the projects. However, what he truly needs to do is repair the damage already done and permanently halt the construction projects.
