Reading the interview of the Minister of Justice, Marios Hartsiotis in Phileleftheros we noted his revelation that individuals beyond suspicion, who handle large sums of money without being able to justify their origin, will now be investigated.
He also referred to the efforts to establish a unit of the Sub-Directorate of Financial Crime Investigation.
We believe this is a step in the right direction. If this unit gains momentum, it will strike both the underworld and white-collar criminals. It is worth remembering that the 2023 Global Crime Index highlights the need for improvement in this area in Cyprus and emphasises the need to strengthen the powers of law enforcement agencies.
It should be noted that this index, which determines/measures the size of the crime problem in each country, is compiled by the “Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime”, which is comprised of experts in the field.
