Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has congratulated US Senator Bob Menendez on becoming the new chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
“Congratulations to @SenatorMenendez, a staunch supporter of a just solution to the #Cyprus problem, on becoming the new Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee” Anastasiades wrote on his twitter account late on Thursday.
“We look forward to working closely with you to continue fostering greater stability in the Eastern Mediterranean,” he added.
Menendez was behind the bill approved in September lifting for one year its three-decade-old arms embargo on Cyprus to allow “non-lethal” military goods to be sold to the Mediterranean island.
Government spokesman Kyriakos Koushos had said the development was a “recognition” of the Mediterranean island’s role.
“It indicates the importance which the US and Cyprus attribute to strengthening their bilateral relations, particularly in defence and security,” he also said in a statement.
