Cyprus-Israeli working group to prepare for restoration of air links

Cyprus and Israel have set up a working group to prepare for the resumption of flights between the two countries, Israel’s ambassador in Nicosia Shmuel Revel told CNA on Friday.

The working group is made up of health, airline and tourism experts and will prepare the required regulations for approval by decision makers.

“There are risks which must be minimised but there is also a significant opportunity to further deepen synergies between Israel and Cyprus,” the ambassador said.

Asked about tourism cooperation options in the light of the coronavirus outbreak, Revel said the first priority is passengers’ health and safety.

“The work we have started is an important first step so that Israelis and Cypriots can once more cover the short distance between the two countries. This will also open the door for further development of our economic ties, trade, industry, energy, innovation and gradually also tourism,” he said.

The two countries have successfully managed the coronavirus outbreak which is a good starting point to these efforts.

“We must move forward carefully but there is solid foundation for our efforts to resume airline links between Israel and Cyprus,” he added.

With countries dealing with how to reopen their borders, the working group will draw up the regulations for approval by decision makers.

Moreover, the innovation bridge between Israel and Cyprus can help incorporate technological tools to monitor the situation, he added.
