Cypriot students ring bells over reduction of bee populations

Two Cypriot high school students have recently submitted thorough studies before the EU on the dangers posed by reductions in bee populations.

The Paphos students took advantage of EU programmes focusing on the environment to elaborate on the measures that must be taken to protect bees, Philenews also reported on Monday.

In the meantime, the Association of Beekepeers in Cyprus started a campaign in 2018 to raise awareness for the protection of bees. And to also inform of the benefits that bees have on ecosystems.

Hundreds of bees are killed in Cyprus every year after farmers use spray for citrus trees.

The use of certain types of spray is prohibited by law during flowering periods, as they are harmful to bees.

It is estimated that one third of the human food supply depends on pollination by insects, birds and bats, most of which is accomplished by bees, whether wild or domesticated.
