House of Representatives: A brief history of a building

Relevant News

With the proclamation of the Republic of Cyprus on the 16th of August 1960, the House of Representatives was constructed over Nexrou Street, in the centre of Nicosia. Thirty-four years later, in 1994, there was a high demand for a new building. At the time, a proposal submitted by architects Diomedes Kythreotis and Kohn Pederson Fox Associates (International) PA was considered among the best.

In 2009, during the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, the issue for a new building came again under the spotlight, with the already existed plans to be reformed in order to comply to international policies regarding the treatment of archaeological sites and artefacts.

Meanwhile, the consortium of foreign architects has been dismantled and Diomedes Kythreotis’ office was responsible for modifying the plans according to new legislations (such as accessibility, energy efficiency, etc.) Nowadays, the project is said  to be carried out through a certain program of Construction- Design and Maintenance.

If the project goes ahead as planned, is scheduled to be ready for 2023.
