Covid-19: A round-up of the latest developments in Cyprus

One more person has died from the virus, the Health Ministry said on Monday, and five more tested positive as consultation with the health experts at the Presidential Palace begins for the gradual lifting of lockdown measures.

Another supermarket was announced of identifying a positive case among its staff on Tuesday as the Chamber of Commerce and Industry asks authorities to reconsider the policy of naming businesses where employees have tested positive for coronavirus as this is damaging to businesses’ reputation.

Doctors and theologians entered a church reopening debate as the Archbishop intends to ask the President to reopen churches in the initial stage of measure lifting despite expert voices not in favour.

The UNHCR office in Cyprus is pleased that steps are taken to improve the living conditions of asylum seekers as the Health Ministry announces testing for Covid-19 for 10% of residents at the Kokkinotrimithia and Kophinou accommodation centres.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry has allowed travel to Cyprus of employees working at drilling rigs off the island’s coast and the Deputy Research Ministry is putting together a platform for remote operation of some Court functions.

At the same time, the tourism sectors of Greece and Cyprus are planning to work together to ‘exchange’ tourists as soon as conditions allow.

In lockdown violation updates, an MP was booked for eating at a Larnaca rotisserie as reports revealed that only 36% of out of court fines issued by police for decree violations have actually been paid.

And finally, on the Erimi congregation saga, 20 people, including a priest, will face charges for attending mass.
