A three month old baby diagnosed with coronavirus is in a good condition in the special ward of Makarios Hospital while a 20 month old girl from the British Bases has been admitted to the same hospital with symptoms and test results are still pending.
Dr Avraam Elias, head of the pediatric unit told CyBC that the three month old, a boy, was admitted on Tuesday evening. The baby had developed some symptoms after having come into contact with a confirmed case and at the advice of pediatricians was admitted to the hospital..
The baby was tested and the test result came in last night — the first under-16 year old in Cyprus to be diagnosed with Covid-19.
Elias said that statistics abroad show that about 4% of cases are under 16, so it was anticipated that Cyprus too would see such cases.
He clarified that children usually have minor symptoms which are difficult to distinguish from flu. As a general rule they do not become seriously ill.
“But rules have exceptions. There may be complications so we need to take precautionary measures,” he said.
Asked about the three months old baby, the doctor said that the little boy is in good condition.
“Because of the young age, the baby will remain in hospital another 48 hours or so. Depending on the condition, the baby boy will possibly be discharged in two or three days to isolate at home,” he said.
Tracing meanwhile is underway of the baby’s contacts.
The infant from the British Bases was admitted on Wednesday with respiratory difficulties, has been tested for coronavirus and the results are pending, the doctor said.
He clarified that the infant’s condition was under control.
