Coronavirus: Another 123 booked for breaking decree, total of 414 since movement restrictions in force

A total of 123 drivers and pedestrians were found to be in violation of decrees restricting movement to the absolute necessary overnight.

They were among 1570 checks carried out by police from 6 pm on Wednesday to 6 am on Thursday.

As regards drivers and pedestrians by district:

Nicosia: 294  checks, 45 booked

Limassol: 338 checks, 24 booked

Larnaca: 326 checks, 17 booked

Paphos: 130 checks, 13 booked

Famagusta: 256 checks, 12 booked

Morphou: 78 checks, no bookings

Overall, since the decree came into force at 6 pm on Tuesday, a total 414 have been booked for not carrying the required documentation.

Police chief Kypros Michaaelides told CyBC radio on Thursday morning that police would in the next few days have a system in place to issue out of court, on the spot fines of 150 euro.

Pending that, those who have been booked will be charged and will stand trial, he said. “The penalty is the decision of the court,” he said.

Meanwhile, another 3311 checks were carried out overnight on premises to ensure they are complying with rules that have closed a large number of establishments and placed a maximum on the number of people can be in the same indoor space at the same time.

Four were booked — one in Limassol, two in Larnaca and one in Paphos.
