Coronavirus: A round-up of the latest developments in Cyprus

The Health Ministry has announced that another nine patients have tested positive for coronavirus, one of whom from the British Bases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 58.

A paediatrician at Limassol Hospital and a nurse at Paphos General Hospital were among the new nine cases, which led the State Health Services Organisation Okipi to activate protocols, announcing that there will be no further admissions at the children’s ward of Limassol Hospital until further notice and that all children’s outpatients appointments are cancelled till further notice, although it was advised that coronavirus in children has been found to be mild.

No new confirmed cases have been reported by the Turkish-held northern areas maintaining the number at 20.

Commissioner for Volunteerism Yiannis Yiannaki has activated the protocol covering volunteers in emergency situations and is calling all those over 18 interested in helping to declare their interest.

A new decree issued has expanded the list of services designated as essential and prohibits the washing of the interiors of cars at car washes and petrol stations until April 13.

In travel ban news, at least 600 people, mostly from the UK and Greece have asked through the Foreign Ministry to repatriate to Cyprus before Larnaca and Paphos Airports close to all passenger flights at 3 am on March 21 for two weeks.

Minister of Transport Yiannis Karousos said that a new decree would prohibit all flights to Cyprus airports except for cargo aircraft.

The British Foreign Office has issued travel advice for UK visitors in Cyprus, telling British nationals in Cyprus to follow the advice of the Cypriot authorities, which includes vacating their tourist accommodation by March 21.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Tourism Savvas Perdios has urged hoteliers to make their hotels available to quarantine the repatriated for two weeks upon their return.

In Church news, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople has called on the faithful to stay home and follow the instructions of authorities, contrary to Archbishop Chrysostomos of Cyprus’ earlier advice that up to 10 people would be allowed in church.

And in environment news, the Labour Inspection Department said that Coronavirus measures led to unprecedented drop in air pollution in Cyprus cities.
