Police booked 291 people who hit the streets on foot or in their cars without the necessary documents between 6 am and 6 pm on Wednesday, the first day of new restrictions on movement which came into force at 6 pm on Tuesday.
Police spokesman Christos Andreou told CyBC TV on Wednesday evening that police had carried out 5033 checks over the 12 hours and 291 people were booked.
Another 31 were booked overnight.
More than 110 patrol cars and 250 police officers were out islandwide, carrying out checks on highways, the secondary road network and in the towns and villages. Checks were carried out both on cars and on pedestrians.
Citing sources, philenews said that largest number of violations were in the Famagusta district with 128.
