Coldplay, Pink and other artists offer free online concerts

We’re only a few days into our new coronavirus reality of social distancing and self-isolation, and already people are coming up with creative ways to cope. It’s obviously been disappointing for many fans to have concerts from their favourite artists cancelled, but you know who else is stuck at home? Your favourite artists—and they’re ready to entertain.

Chris Martin from Coldplay appears to have started a bit of a trend as he live-streamed a mini concert from his home on March 16, and now many other musicians are scheduling shows of their own.

So, yes, you may be sitting alone in your apartment in coronavirus self-isolation—but that doesn’t mean you can’t go to a show. Here’s a running list of musicians, from John Legend to Katharine McPhee, who are putting out the kind of content the world needs right now.

Coldplay

Since the band members were stuck in different countries, Chris Martin decided to play a little concert from home on Coldplay’s Instagram Live (which you can still view). He even took requests from commentators and played hits like “Green Eyes,” which fans haven’t heard at live shows as much in recent years.

John Legend

The crooner took a cue from Martin and announced he’ll be playing a show on March 17 at 1 p.m. PT (4 p.m. ET). “My friend Chris Martin did a lovely little concert from home today. I’ll be doing one tomorrow at 1pm Pacific time. See you soon. We’ll try to get through this together! #TogetherAtHome,” he tweeted.

Of course, his wife Chrissy Teigen will be there too—and we’re hoping for an appearance by their adorable children, Luna and Miles.

Indigo Girls

After having to cancel a number of tour dates, the folk-rock duo announced they will be streaming a free show and Q&A on Facebook. “We will be going live on Facebook this Thursday, March 19th 6:00pm EST, and playing a low key, home grown set of songs and talking to people directly through Q and A. Plan on tuning in with us!” they wrote in a post.

Katharine McPhee and David Foster
“I’m gonna start covering songs live on insta, kind of like Kelly Clarkson without the tv show or budget. If you ever wanted me to sing your fav song-now’s your chance. Send me some suggestions,” McPhee tweeted on March 16.

She and husband David Foster took to Instagram Live for their first “show” with songs like “Smile,” “I’ll Be Seeing You,” and “Hallelujah.” They plan to perform each evening at 5:30 p.m. PT.

Pink

Pink is letting the world in as she learns how to play the piano—and entertain us all at the same time. Her rendition of “To Make You Feel My Love” is stunning. “Free concert slash piano lessons from my heart to yours. To make you feel my love rehearsals,” she wrote on Instagram.
