Commissioner for the Protection of Children’s Rights Despo Michaelidou has called on decision makers to implement consistent policies of awareness-raising, prevention and law enforcement to combat violence at school.
Her reports focus on the way schools in Cyprus should work to ensure that they are safe and caring places where children can learn in an environment free of repression, intimidation and violence.
Michaelidou pointed out to numerous incidents that have to primarily do with issues of domestic violence and delinquency and consequently with security within school premises.
And she called for coordinated, universal action by all services and parties concerned.
She specifically noted: “Co-responsible Services of the State must develop procedures for full cooperation, coordination and universal taking of actions of essential importance, otherwise any interventions remain fragmentary and, in one way or another, doomed to fail.”
