Changes ahead in terms of hotel employment

There are jobs available at all hotels,  director of the Cyprus Hotels Association Zacharias Ioannides told ACTIVE radio, adding that the terms of employment have changed so that the practice of hotels ‘stealing’ each others employees can be overcome.

“There is unfortunately a problem of understaffing for both trained and auxiliary personnel . We are in constant consultation with the Ministry of Labour in order to find solutions to these problems,” he said.

As Ioannides noted, those interested should communicate directly with hotels and will certainly be absorbed if they can show willingness to work. The greater needs in hotels are for serving staff, kitchen assistants, bartenders, maids, gardeners and for other auxiliary positions.

One issue of concern to hoteliers is the prospect of tourists being diverted to occupied Cyprus with Ioannides saying that while the Cyprus problem remains unresolved, the risk for tourists crossing over to the occupied areas remains high, especially currently, after the fall in the value of of the Turkish pound. ‘There are actions we can take to, at least, prevent companies offering packages and organised vacations to include hotels from occupied areas in their programmes’, Ioannides said.

Ioannides said tourist arrivals during the winter season have doubled, an encouraging development amid efforts to make Cyprus an all-year-round tourist destination.
