Catering establishments ‘taking over’ Ledra-Onasagorou

The Public Works Department is being quizzed about abuse by catering establishments of the pedestrianised areas on Ledra, Onasagorou and Phaneremoni streets, Phileleftheros reported on Wednesday.  It said that Greens MP Yiorgos Perdikis has written to the head of the Public Works Department Chrystalla Malloupa asking whether her department has assessed the results of the permits in Nicosia Municipality.

Perdikis said that space on the pavements that should belong to all pedestrians had been given to a small of group of catering establishments. “Often, particularly in the summer, you can’t walk because of the tables and chairs in the pedestrianised areas,” he said. Often permanent structures have been erected, he added.

The paper said that his complaints have been borne out by checks carried out by the Public Works Department with the paper citing a letter sent to the Municipality in late 2017 saying that inspections have found substantial ‘derogations’ as regards the terms of use of the permits.

One of the conclusions was that there were no safeguards for unimpeded access for pedestrians, people with disabilities and  emergency vehicles among other because a number of catering establishments had spread they tables and chairs to beyond the delineated area.
