«Cartes Postales: love in the midst of war”

Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation hosts a musical theatre performance on the occasion of International Museum Day

The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation, in partnership with the British High Commission and under the auspices of the Department of Antiquities, are staging the musical theatre performance “Cartes Postales: love in the midst of war” in the context of the International Museum Day.

The two performances will be held on Saturday 18 May 2019 (8pm and 10pm) at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation.

The performances at the Museum will bring back to life, for the first time, real love stories of Cypriots who volunteered to fight in the wars of the 20th century: separation, pain, death and the great power of love.

The stories are inspired by writings, letters, poems, dances, events and music from across the world, including the song “Ιt’s a long way to Tipperary,” emblematic of World War I, the classic World War II tune “Lili Marlene,” “L’Accordéoniste,” a song made famous by Édith Piaf, music by composer Mikis Theodorakis and the rousing patriotic songs of Sofia Vembo.

The performance is directed by Elena Hadjiafxenti, who also edited the script and performs in the play. Also taking part are Andreas Papapetrou on the piano, accordion and orchestration, and Maria Gerosimou on the harp and vocal performer, Andreas Koutsoftas (performance), Christos Maos (dancing), Nikos Pittas (violin), Marios Nikolaou (percussion), Nikos Ioannou (contrabass), and Miranda Theodoridou (costume and stage manager).

The performance is being carried out with the invaluable assistance of professor Petros Papapolyviou and with the support of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation.
