British Airways flies 50 dogs and cats from Cyprus to UK amid crisis (photos)

50 lucky dogs and cats were flown to the UK on Thursday by a British Airways cargo flight from Larnaca airport, the Daily Mail reports.

The animals were taken to Larnaca airport by animal shelter staff, among whom members of the animal charity Cyprus Rescue and Rehome that had 10 on their animals on the BA flight.

One member of the charity shared the heartwarming story of the operation on their facebook page:

“It started off early in the morning when a message came through from a friend/RnR supporter and the soon to be pilot of the British Airways Boeing 747 that was en route to Cyprus to collect 50 rescue cats and dogs and take them to their forever homes, 10 of which are very lucky RnR doggies.”

According to the Daily Mail, the flight carrying the 36 dogs and 14 cats landed safely at Heathrow airport and the animals were then driven to Gatwick’s Animal Reception Centre where they were collected by their new owners as well as UK animal shelters.

A crew member of the cargo flight, which also airlifted food and medical supplies, said: “As well as bringing in those supplies on this flight, we were pleased to support this mission to bring these new four-legged family members to the UK to give them the chance of better, more comfortable lives here with their new owners.”
