Blood Bank, Thalassemia Association in plea for blood donations

The Blood Bank of the Ministry of Health warned late on Wednesday of dangerously low supply in blood in a dramatic appeal to donors to actively participate in blood donations, the CNA reports, and expressed regret over the mass cancellation of blood donation events by NGOs in the wake of the latest Coronavirus measures.

The Bank informs the public that blood donations continue normally and reassures that it takes all measures necessary to ensure the safety of donors at the relevant premises.

Is said that due to panic surrounding the confirmed cononavirus cases, donors have stopped donating blood on a massive scale, resulting in a sharp decline of blood reserves to dangerously low levels.

“We call on the public to help us reverse this dramatic development. Patients in surgeries, A&E, people needing blood transfusions and many more depend on our blood reserves,” the Bank said.

It also called on volunteer groups to not call off blood donation events and urged any organised groups wishing to organise blood donations to contact the Blood Bank on 22809098.

It was emphasised that people who travelled anywhere outside Cyprus, people presenting symptoms of any clinical respiratory illness and people who came into contact with a confirmed or suspect Coronavirus case are temporarily excluded from donating blood for a period of 28 days.

Meanwhile, the President of the Pancyprian Thalassemia Association Miltos Miltiadous said that “Donating blood is NOT dangerous” in a post retweeted by the Minister of Health Constantinos Ioannou.
