Berlin meeting important development towards comprehensive Cyprus settlement, says EU

Yesterday’s meeting in Berlin is an important development towards reaching a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue, according to a statement issued today by an EU spokesperson.

More specifically the EU spokesperson stated: “Yesterday’s meeting hosted by UN Secretary General António Guterres with the two Cypriot leaders Nikos Anastasiades and Mustafa Akıncı is an important development towards reaching a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue”.

“We welcome the UN Secretary General’s work to achieve terms of reference to serve as a consensus starting point, and we support the parties` commitment and determination to achieve a settlement based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality as set out in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions,” the spokesperson reiterated.

“The EU has continuously supported and accompanied the talks between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus for a fair, comprehensive and viable settlement of the Cyprus issue in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and in line with the principles on which the EU is founded”, the spokesperson added.

“A comprehensive settlement would be beneficial for Cyprus and the EU, and for wider security and stability in the region”, the EU spokesperson concluded.
