Back to school for taxi drivers in move to improve service

Taxi drivers will be back in the classroom as part of an initiative by the deputy ministry of tourism to upgrade tourism services, Phileleftheros reports.

It said that the taxi drivers will be asked to attend seminars on how to better serve tourists.

Deputy tourism minister Savvas Perdios has discussed various proposals on how to to improve the sevice by taxis and rental car firms with Transport Minister Yiannis Karousos.  The ultimate aim is to make it compulsory for holders of taxi licences to undergo this type of training.

It is understood that the Transport Minister will submit amendments to the legislation at a later stage. For the current year,  the deputy ministry believes that the requirement can be covered with a decree, before the start of the summer season.

The aim is for a training seminar of a few hours on the appropriate way to treat tourists.

The paper says that dozens of complaints are submitted by tourists every year regarding fares and the behaviour of some taxi drivers. And the Paphos Chamber of Commerce, concerned by the situation regarding taxis at Paphos Airport, is proposing fixed fares for some routes.
