Army officer who died saving four soldiers killed by faulty grenade, court rules

A Nicosia court ruled on Monday that a National Guard first lieutenant who died nine years ago in an attempt to save four soldiers, was killed by a faulty grenade.

On November 5, 2009 first lieutenant Charalambos Charalambous and four soldiers were taking delivery of equipment in an underground guardhouse below the former Cyta headquarters in Nicosia.

Charalambous asked the soldiers if they knew what material they are guarding and whether they knew how a grenade works. While he was trying to store the grenade he heard a sound. He told his soldiers to leave and held the grenade close to his body. The grenade exploded, leaving him dead.

The accident was first attributed to incorrect handling by Charalambous, however, his family filed an appeal in 2015, protesting the ruling.

His mother says that after the accident all the grenades of the same type as the one who killed her son, were destroyed in Cyprus and Greece.

On Monday, a Nicosia Court ruled that the accident was caused by a faulty grenade.

A compensation of €105,000 will be given to the family members.

Charalambous, 29 at the time of his death, was posthumously promoted to the rank of captain.
