Another 20 Covid-19 cases, total now 735

Another 20 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Cyprus out of 2905 lab tests, bringing the total to 735, including 10 at the British Bases, the Health Ministry said on Thursday.

The new confirmed cases are:

  • 10 cases found from the large-scale 20,000 tests in workers (1742 tests today)
  • 7 through tracing of the contacts of positive cases (600 tests)
  • 2 from hospital labs (141 tests)
  • 1 from private initiative (303 tests)

Moreover 119 tests were carried out among repatriating passengers. All tested negative.

From Saturday April 11 until 4 pm today a total of 4776 tests were completed from the government’s mass testing programme for workers in the private and public sector.

“The results of the past 24 hours make us particularly happy because they entrench the conviction of the scientific team that day by day the epidemiological picture is in line with our expectations and our targets,” Dr Leontios Kostrikis said.

“The data we see reflect the behaviour of society and are a result of a collective effort. We thank you again and are certain that if we remain committed to the same tactics, the news will continually get better,” he said.

Please do not abandon the effort, continue for a few more days, he concluded.

Dr Marios Loizou said that at a time when the number of coronavirus cases worldwide had reached 2.1 million and the number of deaths was 135,000, Cyprus has managed to stabilise its own figures.

He said that at 3 pm on Thursday, there were 19 coronavirus patients at Famagusta Hospital, the referral hospital for the virus, three of them in the increased care unit.

Five patients were discharged today.

A total of nine patients are intubated in the Nicosia and Limassol ICUs, while another three patients are in the Nicosia ICU but are not intubated.

The condition of all the patients is described as critical but steady.

There are another five coronavirus cases in hospital wards,
