Akel-Diko leaders hold initial talks on 2023 presidential elections possible alliance

Opposition parties Akel and Diko have reiterated that political change in Cyprus is a must after initial talks on Tuesday on a possible alliance in view of February 2023’s presidential elections.

If main opposition left-wing Akel and third-placed centre Diko manage to join forces on a common candidate then success is possible, insiders told Philenews.

After the tete-a-tete meeting between Akel’s leader Stefanos Stefanou and Diko’s Nicolas Papadopoulos the feeling is that the two parties are getting closer towards an agreement. But that there is still some way to go.

The message sent out by both leaders is that there is a will for cooperation and that more meetings are on the agenda.

But whether the meetings will continue in the same pattern, that is only between the two, or with more party members involved remains to be seen.

Tuesday’s talks did not get too deep, according to insiders, one of whom said this was to be expected since names of possible candidates will come at a later stage.
