The Forestry Department has issued yet another fire red alert on Monday, the CNA reports.
In an announcement, the Department emphasised that lighting a fire without a permit is prohibited, as is the discarding of cigarette butts or lit matches within 2km from state forests.
The above, it noted, is a crime punishable by imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine up to €50,000 or both sentences together as per the Forest Law of 2012, and up to 5 years imprisonment and/or €20,000 fine as per the Law for the Prevention and Control of Fires in Rural Areas of 1988.
The Department mentioned that lighting a fire is only allowed at the barbeque areas of picnic sites.
It finally called on the public to be extremely careful during their outings and fully avoid actions and activities that may cause a fire, like using tools that generate heat.
The numbers to call if anyone notices smoke or fire, are 1407 (forestry department) and 112 (fire service).
