Larnaca police on Thursday night arrested a 22 year old driver who was caught speeding at 146 km per hour on Tassos Papadopoulos avenue in Larnaca.
The speed limit is 50 km per hour.
Police said the driver was arrested and taken to Larnaca traffic police unit. There he was charged in writing and released.
He appeared before Larnaca district court on Friday where the case was filed for immediate trial.
He was remanded in custody until Tuesday when the court will hear the facts of the case and issue its decision.
Meanwhile, Larnaca police at the scene of a traffic accident at Kato Varosi avenue found 3 grams of cannabis that appears to have fallen from a biker.
Traffic police head Haris Hadjiyiasemi said a biker tried to avoid police and his bike overturned and he fell to the ground. When police approached to see whether he was OK he ran off and disappeared. Police found three handkerchiefs with 3 grams of cannabis on the ground.
In another case Larnaca police stopped a young man for a routine traffic check and searched his car because of a strong smell. They found 0.79 grams of cannabis in a nylon bag. The driver under went a narco-test and tested positive and has handed over to drug police.
