Two of the Larnaca boats engulfed in flames sunk [PHOTOS]

Relevant News

While the possibility of malicious intent has been initially ruled out, the causes of the fire on boats at Larnaca Marina remain unknown.

Two out of the three vessels consumed by the flames were not only destroyed by the fire but also succumbed to the rough sea conditions as they collided with rocks throughout the night.

Most parts of the boats have sunk, while some remain stranded on rocks near Larnaca Port.

This morning, members of the Fire Service and the Electrical and Mechanical Services conducted investigations at Larnaca Marina, including the third vessel that suffered extensive damage.

As of now, examinations have not shed light on the causes of the fire, as stated by the spokesperson for the Fire Service, Andreas Kettis, to philenews.

“It will be very difficult to determine the causes,” Mr. Kettis mentioned, suggesting that efforts will be made, in collaboration with the marina management, to lift parts of the boats for further examinations.

According to information from the Police, checks on the closed-circuit systems at the Marina revealed no suspicious activities, further supporting the initial indications that this was not a criminal act.

Furthermore, the Fisheries Department is expected to conduct examinations in the area to determine if there is any pollution in the sea from the fuel of the two ships.

The total damage to all three vessels, a catamaran and two powerboats, exceeds €1 million. The owners, two Cypriots and one Ukrainian, had insurance coverage.

In a statement, Kition Ocean Marina reported that the fire broke out at 13:26 on December 21st on one of the privately moored boats.

Due to flammable materials and strong winds, the fire spread to two neighbouring vessels.

Firefighting efforts successfully extinguished the fire on one of the three boats, and the other two were towed to a safe area outside the Marina. The immediate response prevented the situation from worsening, and residents and visitors were safely evacuated.

The company expressed gratitude to the firefighting forces and warm thanks to their collaborators, EDT and Seabliss, as well as volunteers who responded to help.

They also acknowledged the security authorities for their immediate and effective reaction. “Police and firefighting investigations to clarify the causes of the fire are ongoing,” the statement noted.
