Dust in atmosphere linked to spike in respiratory issues

Relevant News

A recent increase in cases of allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma has been linked to elevated dust levels, said pulmonologist Charis Armeftis.

He advised vulnerable groups to avoid dust exposure to protect their health.

“We have observed a rise in cases of allergic rhinitis and asthma flare-ups in recent days. Clinic visits have increased within expected limits,” Armeftis stated.

He noted that public awareness campaigns have helped people manage the situation, especially respiratory patients who understand the importance of adhering to their treatment plans.

However, Armeftis expressed concern about patients who do not regularly take medication and who smoke, as this “aggravates their asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.”

Armeftis warned that high dust levels worsen allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma. Even those without respiratory issues may experience eye irritation, headaches, throat irritation, and coughing.

The Cyprus Department of Meteorology forecasts that dust levels will persist through Wednesday.

“Dust contains inhalable particles that the respiratory system cannot filter, leading to significant inflammation,” Armeftis explained. He emphasised the risk to vulnerable groups, including those with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, respiratory diseases, heart conditions, and the elderly.

“High dust levels can cause flare-ups in respiratory and cardiovascular patients, potentially leading to emergencies or even life-threatening situations,” Armeftis said.

He recommends general precautions such as limiting outdoor exposure, avoiding outdoor exercise, and using protective masks for those working outside. It is crucial to monitor dust levels and take precautions on affected days.

Armeftis stressed the importance for patients to stick to their treatment plans and urged them to consult their doctors immediately if they experience any health complications.
